Legend of Lutung Kasarung, A Folklore from West Java, Indonesia

Prabu Tapa Agung appointed Purbasari, his youngest daughter as his successor. "I am too old, it is time for me to abdicate," said Prabu Tapa.

Purbasari had an older sister named Purbararang. She did not agree with her younger sister being appointed to replace their father. "I am the eldest daughter, your father should have chosen me as his successor," grumbled Purbararang to her fiancé named Indrajaya. Her anger that had peaked made her have the intention of harming her younger sister. She met a witch to cast a spell on Purbasari. The witch cast a spell on Purbasari so that at that moment Purbasari's skin suddenly became covered in black spots. Purbararang had a reason to expel her younger sister. "A cursed person like her does not deserve to be a Queen!" said Purbararang.

Then she ordered a Patih to exile Purbasari to the forest. When they arrived in the forest, the patih was still kind enough to make a hut for Purbasari. He also advised Purbasari, "Be strong, Princess. This trial will surely end, the Almighty will always be with you, Princess." "Thank you, Uncle," said Purbasari.

While in the forest he had many friends, namely animals who were always kind to him. Among the animals was a mysterious black-haired monkey. But the monkey was the most attentive to Purbasari. Lutung Kasarung always made Purbasari happy by taking beautiful flowers and fruits with his friends.

On the night of the full moon, Lutung Kasarung behaved strangely. He walked to a quiet place and meditated. He was asking for something from the Gods. This proved that Lutung Kasarung was no ordinary creature. Not long after, the ground near Lutung cracked and a small lake was created, the water was very clear. The water contained a very fragrant medicine.

The next day Lutung Kasarung met Purbasari and asked her to bathe in the lake. "What good will it do for me?", thought Purbasari. But she was willing to obey him. Not long after she dived in. Something happened to her skin. Her skin became clean as before and she became beautiful again. Purbasari was very surprised and happy when she looked in the mirror in the lake.

In the palace, Purbararang decided to see her sister in the forest. She went with her fiancé and the guards. When she arrived in the forest, she finally met her sister and looked at each other. Purbararang couldn't believe that her sister had returned to her original state. Purbalarang didn't want to lose face, she invited Purbasari to a hair length contest. "Whoever has the longest hair is the winner!", said Purbararang. At first Purbasari didn't want to, but because she kept being pressed, she gave in to her sister. It turned out that Purbasari's hair was longer.

"Okay, I lost, but now let's have a handsome showdown between our fiancés. This is my fiancé", said Purbararang as she approached Indrajaya. Purbasari began to feel restless and confused. Finally she glanced at and pulled Lutung Kasarung's hand. Lutung Kasarung jumped up and down as if to calm Purbasari down. Purbararang laughed out loud, "So that monkey is your fiancé?".

At that moment Lutung Kasarung immediately meditated. Suddenly a miracle happened. Lutung Kasarung turned into a dashing young man with a very handsome face, more than Indrajaya. Everyone was shocked to see the incident while cheering happily. Purbararang finally admitted her defeat and her mistakes all this time. She apologized to her sister and begged not to be punished. The kind Purbasari forgave them. After the incident, they all finally returned to the Palace.

Purbasari became a queen, accompanied by a young man of her dreams. The young man who turned out to have always accompanied her in the forest in the form of a lutung.
