Once upon a time there was a farmer named Toba who lived alone in a fertile, gentle valley. The farmer worked on rice fields and fields for his living.
In addition to working on his fields, sometimes the man went fishing in a river not far from his house. Every time he fished, he easily caught fish because there were indeed many fish in the clear river. He cooked the fish he caught to eat.
One afternoon, after returning from the fields, the man went straight to the river to fish. But after fishing for a long time, he didn't catch a single fish. This was something he had never experienced before. Usually, he could easily catch fish in the river. Because it had been too long since any had taken his bait, he became annoyed and decided to stop fishing.
But when he was about to pull his fishing rod, suddenly the fishing rod was snatched by a fish that immediately pulled the fishing rod far into the middle of the river. His heart, which had been annoyed earlier, turned into joy, because he knew that the fish that had snatched his fishing rod was a big fish. After a while he let the fish pull his fishing rod here and there, then he slowly pulled the fishing rod. When he jerked the fishing rod, a large fish was seen hanging and wriggling at the end of his fishing line. He quickly pulled the fish to land so that it would not escape. Smiling happily, he released the hook from the fish's mouth. As he was releasing the hook, the fish looked at him meaningfully.
Then, after the fish was placed in one place, he went into the river to bathe. He felt very happy because he had never caught a fish that big before. He smiled while imagining how delicious the fish would be when it was grilled. When he left the river to go home, it was already dusk. When he arrived home, the man immediately took the big fish he had caught to the kitchen. When he was about to light a fire to grill the fish, it turned out that the firewood in his kitchen had run out. He immediately went out to get firewood from under his house. Then, while carrying several pieces of firewood, he went back up the house and went straight to the kitchen.
When the man arrived in the kitchen, he was very surprised because the big fish was no longer there. But in the place where the fish had been placed, there were several pieces of gold coins. Because he was surprised and amazed at the strange situation, he left the kitchen and went into the room.
When the man opened the door to the room, suddenly his blood splashed because in the room stood a woman with long, flowing hair. The woman was combing her hair while standing facing the mirror hanging on the wall of the room. A moment later, the woman suddenly turned around and looked at the man who was standing confused at the door of the room. The man was very fascinated because the face of the woman standing in front of him was extraordinarily beautiful. He had never seen such a beautiful woman even though he had wandered far and wide in various countries.
Because it was already night, the woman asked for the lights to be turned on. After the man turned on the lights, the woman invited him to accompany her to the kitchen because she was going to cook rice for them. While waiting for the rice to cook, the woman told him that she was the incarnation of a big fish that the man had caught while fishing in the river. Then she also explained that several gold coins in the kitchen were the incarnation of its scales.
After several weeks of the beautiful woman living in the same house with him, one day the man proposed to the woman to be his wife. The woman stated that she was willing to accept his proposal on the condition that the man must swear that he would never mention the origin of his wife who was transformed into a fish in his entire life. After the man swore this, they married.
A year later, they were blessed with a son whom they named Samosir. The child was very spoiled by his mother which resulted in the child having bad character and being lazy.
After he was old enough, the child was ordered by his mother to deliver rice every day to his father who worked in the fields. However, he often refused to do this task, so his mother was forced to deliver the rice to the fields.
One day, the child was ordered by his mother to deliver rice to the field for his father. At first he refused. However, because his mother kept forcing him, he went to deliver the rice in annoyance. On the way, he ate most of the rice and side dishes. When he arrived at the field, he gave the remaining rice to his father. When he received it, the father was very hungry because the rice had been delivered very late. Therefore, the father became very angry when he saw that the rice given to him was leftovers. His anger grew even more when his son admitted that he had eaten most of the rice. The father's patience was gone and he beat his son, saying, "You can't teach a child. You don't know what's good for you. You're really the descendant of a woman who came from a fish!"
While crying, the child ran home to his mother at home. He told his mother that he had been beaten by his father. He also told her all the insults his father had said to him. Hearing her son's story, the mother was very sad, especially because her husband had broken his oath with the insulting words he said to her son. The mother told her son to immediately go up the hill that was not too far from their house and climb the tallest tree on top of the hill. Without asking any more questions, the son immediately did what his mother told him. He ran towards the hill and climbed it.
When the mother saw that her son had almost reached the top of the tree he had climbed on the hill, he ran towards the river which was not far from their house. When he arrived at the edge of the river, lightning flashed accompanied by the sound of thunder. A moment later he jumped into the river and suddenly turned into a big fish. At the same time, the river flooded and there was also very heavy rain. Some time later, the river water overflowed everywhere and the valley where the river flowed was submerged. Mr. Toba could not save himself, he drowned in the puddle. Over time, the puddle grew wider and turned into a very large lake which people later called Lake Toba. While the small island in the middle was named Samosir Island.
